Drug crimes accusations require strong criminal defense

Trafficking in illegal drugs has been a serious problem in Texas and the rest of the country for many years. Texas’s proximity to the Mexican border does make it an attractive base of operation for distribution of drugs that may be coming in from Mexico and other countries in Central and South America. An investigation spanning several years has recently culminated in multiple people being arrested and charged with drug crimes.

More than 43 people were recently arrested following an investigation of more than two years regarding what authorities say is a Texas drug organization. In addition to those arrests, four other people were arrested previously. Another nine suspects remain at large. In addition to the arrests, officials claim to have seized more than $3.1 million.

Federal indictments filed in conjunction with the arrests allege that the accused participated in the trafficking of cocaine and heroin from Feb. 2016 until April 2018. In addition the accused were indicted for conspiring to commit money laundering and also for allegedly participating in illegal money transfers. The indictment also alleges that those indicted smuggled drugs into the United States with the intent of distributing them through Houston to cities throughout the south and up the East Coast.

Being accused of drug crimes in Texas is a serious offense. Anyone arrested and charged with a crime is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law. A person facing criminal charges in Texas, whether at the state or federal level, will want to consult with a criminal defense attorney. A lawyer can review the facts of the case, apprise the client of what legal options are available and help safeguard a client’s legal rights throughout ensuing court proceedings.
