DUI/DWI the cause of Halloween night fatalities

Halloween is the most deadly holiday of the year. On this scary night, the number of pedestrian deaths by a motor vehicle skyrocket. In fact, in Texas, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that 26 percent of all Halloween pedestrian deaths involved DUI/DWI drivers.

On Oct. 31, children of all ages dress up for trick-or-treat and wander the streets in search of candy. They are unaware of the dangers that may lurk inside the haven of their neighborhoods. Although Halloween falls on Tuesday this year, many trick-or-treat events happen during the weekend. Authorities suggest that parents set a time for youngsters to return home before partygoers hit the streets. Police know of the potential problems and have beefed up patrols in residential neighborhoods.

Experts advise not to drive at all after drinking, but they also suggest all drivers leave their car windows down when in residential areas. A person driving is more likely to hear first before seeing something. Officers have received additional training dealing with drunk driving, but it comes down to partygoers being responsible. If a person is drinking one drink right after another, chances are it is too much. It all comes down to responsible drinking.

Anyone who is facing DUI charges has the right to the best possible defense. In Texas, it may be in his or her best interest to retain seasoned legal counsel. A dedicated criminal defense attorney will challenge any evidence obtained in violation of someone’s rights. An arrest for DUI/DWI is serious, and the consequences are massive. Someone convicted of such charges may face stiff fines, the loss of driving privileges and even his or her job, as well as potential jail time.
