Preparation is a key to successful child support hearings

Divorce changes lives for Texas families, but it does not necessarily have to ruin them. When parents are willing to cooperate and compromise, it is often possible to obtain a fair settlement, including a child support agreement. Regarding the latter, it is imperative that both parents play by the rules and come to court well-informed and sufficiently prepared.

Any attempt to manipulate data or gain unfair control of child support proceedings would undoubtedly be frowned upon by the court. Full disclosure is required when parents report income, tax information or list financial needs. It is also important to make sure all documents being sent through postal mail are signed and returned on time.

As for being on time, showing up late to a court hearing is not likely going to win the court’s favor. It is always best to arrive early, dress in a neat, clean and business-like fashion, and be prepared to provide any and all information the judge overseeing the case might request.

Once a Texas court issues a child support order, both parents must fully adhere to the terms. If, for some reason, a parent believes more money is needed or that he or she can no longer meet payments as specified, a petition must be filed in court to request a modification of an existing child support order. Any parent with questions or concerns about a child support issue may reach out for support by contacting an experienced family law attorney.
